Edwards River – Lake Mavis.

Trip Overview

Day 1 involves 5 hours hiking along the Edwards River track, camping near Edwards Hut. Day 2 is 5-6 hours hiking over straightforward untracked river and tussock terrain to Lake Mavis. Mt Oates is an easy scramble from Lake Mavis with great views... or just lay around by the lake. Day 3 is 5-6 hours easy hiking, all downhill, along the Mingha River track. Anyone interested in an easier 2 day option can hike up to Edwards Hut, camping or sleeping under the stars with the possums and the sandflies. Return next day down Edwards River. This trip is weather dependent so if the forecast is bad I'm offering an alternative trip to Kaikoura where it never rains and daytrips to Sawcut Gorge, Papatea Fault, Mt Fyfe or Patutu. Good roadside camping at Waima River mouth.
