Globe Hill

Trip Overview

Globe Hill is a historic gold-mining area above Reefton offering a rewarding mix of forest track, old mining relics, and sweeping views across the Inangahua valley. The climb winds through regenerating native bush and open ridgelines, with sections of old pack track still visible in places, giving a real sense of the area’s gold rush past. It’s a steady uphill effort rather than a technical tramp, but the gradient and uneven ground keep it engaging and satisfying for reasonably fit walkers. At the top, the landscape opens out to broad West Coast vistas, with tussock clearings and scattered remnants of historic workings adding character to the ridge. On a clear day you can see deep into surrounding ranges, with changing light making it a great spot for photography or a rest stop before descending. The return journey is quicker but requires care on loose sections.
