Kirwan’s Hut
Trip Overview
Kirwans Hut is a remote backcountry hut tucked into the hills above Reefton in the Victoria Forest Park, reached via the historic Kirwans Track. The route follows old gold-mining trails through beech forest and steep ridgelines, offering a strong sense of West Coast history and isolation as you climb steadily toward the alpine basin where the hut sits. Once at the hut, trampers find a basic but well-sited shelter surrounded by rugged terrain and expansive views on clear days. Conditions can change quickly, with wet weather, river crossings and snow possible at higher elevations, so it suits well-prepared hikers looking for a solid overnight or multi-day backcountry experience rather than a casual walk. It is best accessed in stable weather windows and requires good fitness due to sustained climb and rough track sections.
