Wangapeka Loop

Trip Overview

The Wangapeka Loop is a classic backcountry circuit linking the Karamea and Wangapeka valleys on the edge of Kahurangi National Park. Starting near Rolling River, the track follows the Wangapeka River through beech forest, swing bridges, and wide river flats before climbing steadily to Little Wanganui Saddle. Along the way, historic huts and remnants of early gold mining give the trip a strong sense of history, while the steady gradient makes for an achievable multi-day adventure. Beyond the saddle, the track descends into the Karamea catchment, where the landscape opens and the river valleys feel remote and untouched. Huts are well spaced for a relaxed pace, allowing time to enjoy the scenery, wildlife, and changing terrain. The loop is ideal for trampers looking for a rewarding but manageable trip, combining classic hut-to-hut travel with a true wilderness feel.
