Goldsborough Track

Trip Overview

The Goldsborough Track is a classic West Coast tramp that follows an old gold mining route through dense native forest and along the winding Goldsborough River. Beginning near Stafford, the track quickly leaves the road behind and enters a quiet world of rimu, fern, and moss-covered bush. The path undulates gently, with sections of well-formed track broken by roots, mud, and the occasional river crossing, giving it a true backcountry feel while still being accessible to reasonably fit walkers. As the track progresses deeper into the valley, remnants of the area’s gold mining past begin to appear, from tailings and cuttings to old hut sites hidden among the trees. Swing bridges and open river flats provide contrast to the enclosed forest, creating a varied and engaging journey. It’s a rewarding trip for those looking to experience the history and raw beauty of the West Coast.
