A small group of us set off with Vicky, Karen & Harran intending to tramp into the Crow Hut via the valley, and Brent, Jaci & Annabel planning to head into Crow Hut via Avalanche Peak. However, when we arrived in Arthur’s Pass it was windy and cold. A trip over to the DoC office confirmed that it wasn’t the best day for heading up Avalanche Peak so the wise decision was made for everyone to head up the valley track. From Arthur’s Pass we made a quick stop at Greyneys Shelter to drop off some TA walkers we had befriended and then headed to Klondyke Corner to start.

The first stretch from Klondyke Corner to Crow Stream took about 1.5 hours, following the Waimakariri River bed. The river was incredibly low and we only crossed a couple of shallow branches. The walking was straight forward but the rocky terrain was uneven and it was hot with little wind.
Once we reached Crow stream, the walk became much more enjoyable. Cool, clear water tumbling over smooth boulders, and plenty of spots to stop and take in the scenery. A highlight was a refreshing (very cold) swim at the crossing point before we travelled up the true right of the valley. The views of Mt Rolleston and Crow Glacier were spectacular, a real reminder of the grandeur of the Southern Alps.
At Crow Hut, we spent time exploring the nearby stream, playing games, and soaking in the peaceful alpine surroundings. The alpine plants around the hut were beautiful, adding to the charm of this remote spot. We also feasted on delicious snowberries. Vicky & Jaci set up their tents outside, while Harran, Brent, Karen & Annabel stayed in the hut. That night, a kea made its presence known, keeping us on guard for our gear!

Day two greeted us with cloud cover and a cooler temperature, making for a pleasant walk out along Crow Stream. Once we reached the Waimakariri River bed Vicky & Annabel decided to take a detour to Anti Crow Hut, following a different route back while the others took the main track. Our reward at the end of the tramp? A well-earned ice cream stop in Arthur’s Pass—perfect after a couple of great days in the mountains.
