Bucklands Peak

Saturday 5th April 2025

Our tramp to Buckland Peaks Hut began with a long, 6 km walk through a farm, which took us some time but allowed us to ease into the trip. Some light rain was an inconvenience but not enough to put on a jacket. As we walked, we looked forwards to the peaks which were covered in cloud hoping they would clear as the weather forecast predicted before we got there. The path was mostly flat, and straight until we reached the start of the proper track. From there, it changed to a tramping track and the climb began.
The ascent was a steady 1000m uphill climb, but easy to follow although slightly overgrown in areas. The steady uphill march tested our stamina but was ultimately rewarding as we reached the tops.

Along the way, bird life was sparse, but the few birds we did encounter were delightfully curious. A bush robin approached us and pecked at our boots, not at all shy. We paused to enjoy its company, a special moment that added to the charm of the day.
When we finally reached the top, the cloud had mostly cleared and the views were spectacular. To the north and south, we looked out over Westport and beyond, with sweeping vistas of the surrounding hills and valleys. We felt like we had the entire landscape to ourselves.
We arrived at the hut, which was cosy and inviting. After settling in, we relaxed and enjoyed the peaceful surroundings. A perfect spot to unwind after the day’s exertions.

The next day, the cloud was completely gone so we started by climbing up to the ridgeline to admire the Buckland Peaks. After spending time on the ridgeline, taking in the beauty of the area, we began our descent. The track down was equally steady, and it didn’t seem to take long before we were back at the farm track, and from there, it was an easy walk back to the car.
This was a memorable adventure, offering both physical challenge and quiet enjoyment of nature. Highly recommended for those looking for a rewarding but manageable tramp.
